365 days of being a writer: Day 314 (tumblr edition)

Blogger’s down, and I don’t feel like staying up to wait for it to revive. So here’s today’s blog post, truncated and tumbld.

It’s a wonder how the days can move with such excruciating reliability.

Today involved some actual writing at work, and I chose to join a friend for a beer afterward instead of coming straight home to write. I feel a little bit guilty about that, but there has to be balance, right?

I am savoring The Snow Leopard even as I read through the newest issue of Creative Nonfiction. I am trying to better understand this idea, which I think is referred to as “scaffolding,” of an underlying structure through theme. In Snow Leopard, he is really telling a story of living through the loss of a loved one through Zen Buddhism—but via his search for the elusive Tibetan cat. The better essays in CNF have an underlying idea, notion, meaning, that the words in the essay are trying to illuminate. The weaker pieces lose their thread.
